Thrush is a bacterial infection. If there is a foul odor coming from your horse foot and the frog looks gooey and black, your horse probably has thrush! Most horses get thrush at some point in their lives but normally the condition is not a serious problem if treated early. Wet mucky paddocks and horse manure contain the thrush causing bacteria. This type of bacteria is anaerobic, so it likes to hide out where there is no oxygen, like under clumps of dirt stuck under your horse’s hooves.

Interbulbular dermatitis is a fungal or bacterial infection that creates a deep slit in the cleft of the frog. Like pretty much all the other problems of the hoof, a mucky unclean environment is at the root of this problem. Some cases may require antibiotics, so if the slit is very deep have your vet take a look. You farrier will need to trim away all the unhealthy parts of the frog before treatment can begin. The slit has to be kept clean, cotton balls are great for removing the dirt that is stuck deep in the cleft but be careful because it can be quite painful for your horse.

White line disease is a fungal infection of the inner hoof wall which causes the outer wall to chip away. A white chalky substance can be seen in the crevasses created by the disease. The main causes of this condition are mucky wet paddocks as well as damp filthy stalls. Using a greasy hoof dressing will actually aggravate your horse’s condition! Unless a chunk of hoof is missing, white line does not normally cause lameness. You will probably need your vet or farrier to cut away the unhealthy parts of the hoof before you can start the treatment.

Just like white line disease seedy toe is a fungal infection of the inner wall, but in the case of seedy toe only the toe is affected. This chronic condition creates a cavity that gets filled with dirt, debris and horn. In some cases the front of the hoof will crack. Horses don’t normally go lame because of seedy toe. You might want your vet to take an x-ray to make sure you are not dealing with a more serious condition like a keratoma or founder. Your farrier will need to clean out the cavity before you can start the treatment.
